Energy geostructures an example of energy geotechnologies
This seminar addresses the role of the mechanics of geomaterial and structures in the context of the development of innovative multifunctional technologies for energy production and storage applications. Among the various energy geotechnologies that are currently being developed around the world for the considered purpose, the talk analyses the features of so-called energy geostructures, i.e., innovative structures that can support structurally all built environments while providing renewable geothermal energy for their heating and cooling. Multiphysical phenomena governing the behavior and performance of energy geostructures are highlighted, and the results of analytical, numerical and experimental investigations addressing these phenomena are discussed. The presentation concludes with a summary of the capabilities of energy geostructures in the sustainability of the built environment and comments on scientific questions and engineering problems whose solution is paramount to address the previous goal.
